Students Protest Cuts to Higher Education

I jumped the stage at today’s campus demonstration and had a few things to say. Click link below to see the video clip.

More photos are coming soon, along with a breakdown of the issues. This matters. Speak your truth!

Speaking Up is About Democracy. It’s About Freedom!

Tiger Woods Speaks. And So Do I.

Tiger Woods speaks.

And so do I.

Read my quotes in Abiola AbramsKiss and Tell News article about Tiger Woods’ apology. Twenty-two top sex and relationship writers and performers weigh in. And, of course, none of us agree. But that’s what keeps things lively!

Top Sex and Relationship Authors, Scholars, Bloggers, and Performers ranging from bestselling authors like Stephen Elliott, Deborah Gregory and Terrance Dean to porn and erotica stars like Mr. Marcus and filmmaker Candida Royalle react …

Masculinity vs. Feminism (?!)

In December 2009 I was invited to appear on the Jesse Lee Peterson Radio Show, a syndicated am talk radio program featured throughout the Bible Belt and heard across the country. Hosting the show was The Rev. Peterson who is described as “the most courageous, outspoken critic of the liberal left and the so-called ‘black leadership’ in America today.” The episode was titled Masculinity vs. Feminism.

I would prefer Masculinity and Feminism, because there’s nothing at odds between the two! These are difficult dialogues and important debates. But it’s not a football game or two teams going at each other for The Big Score. This is not a zero-sum competition.

Anyway, many people have asked so, by popular request, I’m posting a link to the archived recording.

(Scroll down to episode 47, December 2, 2009. My segment begins at 1:26 in hour 3.)

Jesse Lee Peterson is a staunch anti-choice Republican. He pretty much hates President Obama and left-wing Democrats for “mapping out an aggressive agenda to take America down the path to socialism.” Peterson claims that women cause their own abuse (because they’re so angry). But is it true (like he argues) that women “don’t want to hear the truth about themselves”? Is it really (angry) Black women’s fault that so many of their sons are in jail? Did I cause a listener to feel violent?

Listen to the show and decide for yourself …

And, for the record: Our clear disagreements notwithstanding, Mr. Peterson was a gracious host.

The Best Thing About Book Tours . . .

is meeting new people and seeing old friends. I’ve been meaning to post these photos from my Men and Feminism events since . . . oh . . . October.

Here they are. Finally!

Where the Men Are . . .

St. John’s University

On November 6-7 there was an amazing conference focusing on men’s anti-sexist and violence prevention work. My write-up about it for Ms. Magazine is available here:

Feminist Sex in Baltimore

The Panelettes: Cara Bruce, Shawna Kenney, and Shira Tarrant

Here’s a  photo of the wonderful Baltimore audience.
The Feminist Sex event was at The 2640 Space, a beautiful converted church.

I’m back in Los Angeles and catching my breath after a series of amazing readings and lectures I gave along the I-95 corridor: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and D.C.

These photos are from Baltimore. I asked the intelligent, feisty, irreverent authors Cara Bruce and Shawna Kenney to join me in one more of a series of Feminist Sex readings.

What’s Feminist Sex? Nobody knows. For sure. Yet. But I’ve been bringing the anti-sexist, sex-positive conversations together in one venue. Shake, stir . . . and be on the look-out for new book in the works titled (you’ve got it!), Feminist Sex.

Thanks to Red Emma’s Bookstore for inviting us and to the 2640 Space for housing the event, which outgrew the bookstore space.

Video: Men and Feminism

This video is from a talk I gave in Boston in Spring 2009.

Thank you so much to everyone at The Center for New Words and NOMAS, Boston Chapter for inviting me!
