Wheaties Fuels a Breakfast of Stereotypes

Hey sports fans (and cereal eaters)! Take a bite of this: Wheaties Fuels a Breakfast of Stereotypes. Look at the faces on the new Wheaties boxes and you’ll find more than your recommended daily allowance of race and gender stereotypes. I’d love to read your comments and opinions on my newest Ms. Magazine Blog post.

On the Road

I’ve been on the road this spring, speaking at Ohio University, Drake University, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Along with giving lectures on social change and readings from my newest book, Men and Feminism, I got the chance to meet so many people and to hear what they’re thinking about. That’s kinda my favorite part about traveling. At Drake University I hung out in the bleachers with some of the guys from the football team. We talked about sexual consent and I listened to their concerns about how to be strong allies in preventing sexual assault:

At the University of Illinois, I got to eat frozen yogurt and talk about all things pop culture. (Does the combo get better than that?)

And at Ohio University, I got to dish over dinner with students, staff and professors. Can I just say? Loved the conversation about fashion politics. (Photo coming asap.)

My thanks to the so-many amazing folks I’ve met for their graciousness, interest, and shared commitment to gender justice. And to those who came to hear me speak and are newer to the issues, I appreciate the forthright questions and honest inquiries. It’s what brings us together.

I’m Blogging For Ms. Magazine!

On International Women’s Day, Monday, March 8, 2010, Ms. Magazine launched its new blog.  Staffed by competitively selected contributors, the site intends to be the blog of record for an international, intergenerational, and intercultural audience interested feminist news and commentary.

I’m excited to announce that I’ve joined the awesome and amazing group of Ms. Magazine Blog writers. My first post — on sexual groping in schools — is linked below. The media’s framed this as a Brand New Discovery (?!) and wonders whether groping is a form of sexual assault or a schoolboy prank. I think you can guess where I stand on this, but I hope you’ll click through, check out the blog, leave your comments, and show some linklove. Thank you, Ms.! I’m thrilled to join the team.

Masculinity vs. Feminism (?!)

In December 2009 I was invited to appear on the Jesse Lee Peterson Radio Show, a syndicated am talk radio program featured throughout the Bible Belt and heard across the country. Hosting the show was The Rev. Peterson who is described as “the most courageous, outspoken critic of the liberal left and the so-called ‘black leadership’ in America today.” The episode was titled Masculinity vs. Feminism.

I would prefer Masculinity and Feminism, because there’s nothing at odds between the two! These are difficult dialogues and important debates. But it’s not a football game or two teams going at each other for The Big Score. This is not a zero-sum competition.

Anyway, many people have asked so, by popular request, I’m posting a link to the archived recording.

(Scroll down to episode 47, December 2, 2009. My segment begins at 1:26 in hour 3.)

Jesse Lee Peterson is a staunch anti-choice Republican. He pretty much hates President Obama and left-wing Democrats for “mapping out an aggressive agenda to take America down the path to socialism.” Peterson claims that women cause their own abuse (because they’re so angry). But is it true (like he argues) that women “don’t want to hear the truth about themselves”? Is it really (angry) Black women’s fault that so many of their sons are in jail? Did I cause a listener to feel violent?

Listen to the show and decide for yourself …

And, for the record: Our clear disagreements notwithstanding, Mr. Peterson was a gracious host.

On the Radio! Pacifica’s Progressive Forum

On November 26, Lilian Care invited me to join her as a guest on Houston Pacifica Radio’s The Progressive Forum (90.1 FM).

We talked about sex and gender, what men can do to get involved feminist social change, online hater trolls, and what happened at the recent Minnesota conference of campus-based antisexist men.

Also on the show is Todd Minerson, the Executive Director of the White Ribbon Campaign — a global organization of men working to end men’s violence against women. Todd has tons of good information about men and violence prevention, and shifts toward worldwide gender equality.

Todd is on the beginning of the show; I come on about halfway through.
